On-site Feature

Te Mata Lodge is set in a hidden valley. Situated on 10 acres of grassy lawns, gardens, and native bush. The Te Mata Creek borders the property and provides opportunities for swimming and kayaking, gemstone gathering, gold panning, and river walking. BBQs, picnic areas, and benches are situated under the trees along the river for meals, a quiet cup of tea, a shared bottle of wine, or peaceful contemplation. The abundance of native bush and birds make for idyllic peacefulness as your Coromandel Accommodation.

Each cottage, chalet, and the cabin has a booklet with information about Te Mata Lodge facilities, day trips and outings, and historical/geological information about the Coromandel.

SWIMMING AND KAYAKING

Te Mata Lodge has four swimming holes along with the property. Our most accessible and popular swimming hole is a large area with a sandy beach bordered by Pohutukawa. This is where adults and children alike enjoy a paddle with the kayaks. A range of kayaks is available, free of charge, for all ages and sizes, as well as paddleboards and inner-tubes.

WALKS

We have several walks here at Te Mata Lodge—a bush walk, river walk, native tree trail, coastal track. There are over 10 acres in our hidden valley for you to explore. Ask at the office for directions and maps. At the office, we also have information about walks further afield.

BIRD WATCHING

There are 50+ New Zealand native and introduced birds known in the Te Mata area. We have a brochure available for our guests which lists the birds which have been spotted, and gives pointers on the best places to find them.

SHELLFISH GATHERING AT TE MATA POINT

For a novel experience borrow a bucket from us and head down to Te Mata point at low tide to collect shellfish such as mussels, pipis, and cockles. Max limit is 25 per person. RAHUI IN PLACE – Gathering is currently banned by the local iwi (indigenous tribe) to allow the shellfish bed to replenish

ROCK HOUNDING AND GOLD PANNING

Te Mata Stream is renowned for its gemstones. Call into the office for pans and tips on finding carnelian, chert, chalcedony, jasper and other gemstones. If you intend to do some river walking and rock hounding please bring suitable footwear.

GLOW WORM GROTTO

A small colony of a dozen or so glow worms are nestled under an overhang on the river bank. This is seasonal and from time to time the river rises to levels that knock the glow worms back. Come see us at the office to find out how the glow worms are doing and where to discover them.

GAMES

Petanque, badminton rackets, volley balls, cricket bats, board games available. Inquire at the office.

Gas BBQs are available free of charge. Fire restrictions limit the use of wood BBQs.
